Diabetic Foot Screening
It has been estimated that there are more than 2.5 million people who suffer with diabetes in the UK. Recent figures have also suggested that there are another 0.5 million people with diabetes who don't even realise the fact - there's no doubt about it - diabetes is a growing problem, and a problem that can affect the feet severely.
Diabetes affects the foot in many ways. Over time blood supply can diminish and sensitivity in the foot is impaired as nerves begin to reduce in numbers. This can lead to an increased risk of infection which can spread and become catastrophic.

What To Expect
During a diabetic foot screening appointment:
- Neurological testing - a series of simple detecting instruments are used on your toes and the balls of your feet to check for levels of sensitivity. We will also test your lower limb reflexes, and check whether you can differentiate between hot and cold.
- Circulation testing - Doppler monitoring the pulses in your feet and legs to listen to the sound of the blood moving in the arteries of your legs and feet. You may also have the blood pressure of your legs taken, called ABPI (Ankle Brachial Pressure Index)
- Foot inspection - your feet will be checked for any innocuous lesions that can lead to diabetic complications such as simple corns, calluses and nail problems and advice given on the most appropriate treatments available to you.
